Carson City Board of Supervisors unanimously choose Robert Weise for Senate appointment, final vote Wednesday
The Carson City Board of Supervisors unanimously selected Carson City resident Robert L. Weise to recommend to fill the vacant senate seat shared between Washoe County and Carson City.
After Washoe County and Carson City each nominate an individual, they will jointly choose who will fill the senate seat.
Weise is 76 years old and has been a Nevada resident since 1956. He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969, and is the owner or has been the owner of several businesses including Lakeview Estates and Realty, Bishop Construction, Lightning W. Ranch, Bobcat Ranch, and more.
Weise served three terms in the Nevada State Assembly from 1975 to 1979, and a special session in 1980. He served as the Nevada Representative for the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and as a Commissioner for the Nevada Ethics Commission and the Colorado River Commission.
Weise currently resides in Carson City with his wife of 48 years, Cathy Valenta Weise.
“I greatly appreciate your vote of confidence,” said Weise following the vote. “I’ll do the best I can.”
Weise added that while the other Carson City candidates were highly qualified, “To do an effective job, (my) experience will make all the difference.”
Nevada State Senator Ben Kieckhefer recently resigned from his Senate seat, which represents District 16 in the Nevada Legislature. Because District 16 is comprised of both Carson City and portions of Washoe County, state law requires the Carson City Board and the Washoe County Board to first meet separately to each determine a single candidate to nominate to fill the vacancy, and then to meet jointly to appoint a person to the position.
The final vote will take place on Nov. 10.
