Winter Weather Advisory foretells snow across the valley floors this weekend, expect high winds Friday
A strong cold front will push through the Sierra and western Nevada beginning Friday that will bring gusty winds and much colder temperatures. Beginning Saturday, there is a strong chance for snow throughout the Reno, Carson City and Minden region.
Snow is expected in amounts between 1 to 4 inches, with the possibility of some local amounts up to 7 inches.
The most likely place for light snow accumulation will be the Greater Reno, Carson City and Minden Area beginning 10 p.m. Saturday through 10 a.m. Sunday.
Plan on slippery road conditions and poor visibility with periods of moderate to heavy snow Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Winds will increase significantly into early Friday morning with a quick burst of winds that may produce areas of blowing dust, choppy lake conditions, as well as a brief period of fire weather concerns. Gusts 30 to 45 mph are possible for most areas, with 45 to 60 mph in wind prone spots and in Mono and Mineral counties. Up to 100 mph wind gusts are expected for exposed areas along the Sierra Crest.
The weather service has issued a Red Flag warning for the greater Lake Tahoe area, southern Sierra Front including Alpine, Northern Mono, southern Lyon and western Mineral counties until 9 a.m. Friday morning.
Afternoon temperatures will go from the 60s and 70s to the 30s and 40s over the weekend. Overnight lows will be below freezing this weekend with single digit and teens in the Sierra valleys.
