Bomb squad to x-ray Civil War cannonball in home across from Carson High School
UPDATE: A Carson City man with a Civil War era cannonball informed the Carson City Sheriff's Office Monday that he didn't know if it was live or not. As a precaution, a bomb squad from Douglas County and the Fallon Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit were called to do an x-ray on the metal ball casing, described by the Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad as a military munition.
The owner of the military cannonball munition said he had it for 20 years, said Todd Moss, commander of the Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad. "What we know about (them) is they have the potential for being deadly."
Carson High School was alerted and there wasn't a danger to students, authorities said. Having the bomb squad check it out was a precaution, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. The apartment dwelling with the relic is located at 1540 East Robinson Street, directly across from Saliman Road and Carson High School.
The relic, described as a ball canister container, had been tossed around, used as a door stop and played with for years, according to the owner of it. He said he didn't think it was live but wanted to make sure.
Due to testing, classes at Carson High School were to begin after 10 a.m.
