Western Nevada Musical Theatre's 'Once Upon A Mattress' hits stage weekends starting Friday
We all grew up with it. That saccharine fairy tale of the frail, beautiful princess who won her prince when she detected a pea hidden under a stack of 20 mattresses.
The team of Mary Rodgers, Marshall Barer, Jay Thompson and Dean Fuller took that little fairy tale and fractured it into a musical comedy in 1959. Rather than casting the heroine as a frail, gentle ingenue, she tells the story of Princess Winnifred, a hearty, likable, weightlifting gal who swims the moat to win the wimpy Prince Dauntless.
The domineering, possessive Queen Aggravain is determined, though, to disqualify all contenders for her son. She also refuses to let anyone in the kingdom marry until Dauntless finds a bride, so every lord and lady in the kingdom is very anxious for Dauntless to be wed.
Aggravain’s husband, King Sextimus, is unable to overrule his wife because he was struck mute by a witch’s curse. The only hope for the kingdom is the dashing knight Sir Harry, who decides to take it upon himself to search the swamplands to find a princess quickly when he finds that his sweetheart, Lady Larken, is about to give birth to his child.
The Queen is annoyed that another princess is trying for her son’s hand and decides the perfect test for this earthy princess is to hide a pea under a stack of 20 downy mattresses to see if the lump would disturb Winnifred’s sleep.
The Minstrel, Jester and King deviously learn of the Queen’s test from the castle Wizard, then devise their own scheme to be certain the Princess wins her man.
