Carson City Rotarians to hear need for Children’s Advocacy Center from sheriff and lieutenant
Members of the Rotary Club of Carson City will learn about the need for a community-based Children's Advocacy Center in Carson City. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong and Lieutenant Craig Lowe will lead the presentation which will also cover how interested persons can get involved.
The meeting takes place Tuesday, Oct. 31 at noon in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 West King Street, Carson City. The public is invited to attend.
“Currently children suffering from abuse and neglect are often met with delayed appointments for immediate care,” Furlong says. “We have approximately 59,000 residents, but we don’t have the appropriate level of care and services for our families.”
The presentation will provide an overview of what currently happens when a child is found to be suffering from abuses such as sexual assault and other traumatizing circumstances.
“The child may have to wait days or longer for appointments and rarely take into consideration the life-long impacts of the trauma,” Furlong explains. “The lack of continuing individual mental health treatment in our community is staggering and unwarranted.”
Sheriff Furlong hopes that community members will join in the process of developing a Carson City Children's Advocacy Center. Anyone interested in learning more is welcome to attend the Rotary meeting. Please email carsoncitynvrotary@gmail.com.
