Nevada Day GreenUP shows promise in making Carson City a little greener
This Nevada Day, the GreenUP initiative made its debut in order to help Carson City get a little more green — especially along the parade route.
Reusable cups were sold leading up to the parade in order to cut down on unnecessary waste such as plastic drinking cups, and before the parade even began the 500 limited cups had sold out, over a week and a half before the big day.
However, organizer Donna Walden did hold some aside to sell on parade day for those who may have missed out.
"The entire event went really well," said Walden. "It was a collaborate effort between GreenUP, the Nevada Day organizers, and several local businesses. The purpose of GreenUP is to encourage people to reduce plastic waste, and I believe it helped."
GreenUP also installed water filling stations, borrowed from Incline Village Drink Tahoe Tap campaign, and encouraged event goers to bring reusable water bottles to fill up, and fill up they did. On Parade Day, 25.5 gallons of water was pumped into reusable containers, eliminating the need for over 200 16 oz plastic water bottles.
Waste Management donated recycling stations along the parade route, which collected 30.375 cubic feet of recyclables. Unfortunately, beverage cups are not recyclable, so the amount only counts bottles and cans.
The day after the parade, a trash mob hosted by Carson Parks and Recreation, Muscle Powered, and Carson Demolition collected 180 pounds of recyclables and 1,000 pounds of trash.
"We learned a lot and next year we will do even better," said Walden, "particularly with respect to building public awareness about recycling for the event. "
In addition to the initiative, 18 local bars and restaurants offered a $1 discount to those who brought their reusable GreenUP cups. They are as follows:
