Basque on Curry Street: The Martin Hotel restaurant open for business in Carson City
The new Curry Street building is officially open for business with the opening of the popular Winnemucca basque restaurant, the Martin Hotel.
The Martin Hotel is a traditional basque restaurant, and owner John Arant has had his eyes on Carson City for at least five years.
“In Winnemucca we have a tremendous Carson following,” said Arant. “We have a lot of Carson customers that come to Winnemucca for the Martin. It just seemed natural to expand here, and there are customers here that already know us and have been excited for the expansion.”
The dining room can seat 80 people, and the banquet room seats 60. Already, there have been reservations for holiday banquets and birthdays.
In addition, the Martin Hotel will also provide catering services to the community.
People that are familiar with basque restaurants, such as Louis in Reno and the JT in Gardnerville will find a familiar experience with the Martin Hotel. Traditional basque dinners include an entree such as steak, fish, sweetbreads, tripe, etc., with courses including soup, salad, basque beans, side dishes, fresh baked bread, french fries and bread pudding for dessert.
Full dinner prices range from $17 to $32.
For lunch services, there is a selection of sandwiches, burgers, salads, fish, kids meals, and more.
Currently, the Martin Hotel is having a soft opening, with both lunch and dinner services, but the menu is limited while they work out any remaining kinks and ramp up momentum.
They are still interviewing prospective hosts, cooks, waitresses, and more.
Currently, there is no scheduled “Grand Opening.”
“We are really, really happy to be here,” said Arant. “We’re hoping this place will be as good as the Martin in Winnemucca, which is superb. That’s the goal here, and I think we’ll hit it really quick.”
The 308 Curry Street project’s completion has been long awaited. The building is zoned mixed commercial and residential, with businesses on the first two floors and residences above.
The Martin Hotel will be serving lunch Monday through Friday from 11 am - 2 pm, and dinner seven days a week from 4-9 pm.
