Carson City deputies arrest man for allegedly attempting to break into vehicle at crosswalk

A Dayton man was arrested Monday for suspicion of attempted robbery that ended with the suspect giving himself up, a Carson City sheriff's arrest report states.

David Reed was taken into custody in the area of North Roop and East Telegraph at around 9:56 p.m. According to the arrest report, CCSO officers were dispatched for an attempted vehicle theft.

The victim reported a white male adult with a brown jacket was attempting to enter his vehicle while he was stopped at the stoplight at the intersection of East Robinson and North Roop. The victim told dispatch he was able to drive away from the suspect and drove to his residence.

Officers arrived on scene and attempted to locate the male suspect, later identified as Reed. He was on foot, and as dispatch was attempting to get direction of travel information, deputies drove through the surrounding neighborhood including the parking lot of the community center. Dispatch advised the man was walking southbound on Roop Street.

A deputy drove southbound bound on Roop and heard yelling and observed the suspect in the front yard of a residence. The man yelled "I'm the one you're looking for," the arrest report states. The subject, at taser point, was ordered to get down on the ground and commanded to his stomach. He was cuffed and detained.

Deputies then met with the victim a few minutes later, who was able to drive by with the deputy to confirm that it was Reed who attempted to enter his vehicle. The man positively identified Reed, the report states.

The victim later explained that he was traveling southbound on Roop and had stopped at the red light at the intersection of Roop and Robinson. He said he observed Reed in the crosswalk and noted that the vehicle was in neutral and that he accidentally pressed the accelerator of his vehicle, which revved the engine loudly.

The victim said Reed began yelling and approached the passenger side of the vehicle, yelling at him and telling him to roll down his window and open the door. The victim said he told the subject he couldn't roll down the window.

The victim said Reed became more aggressive and continued to yell at him, and pulled out a "handle of liquor" out of his jacket and raised it above his head, and then struck the passenger window with his left fist and began to pull aggressively at the door handle attempting to open the passenger door. The victim said the suspect told him that if he didn't open his door he was going to kill him, the arrest report states.

The victim said he became frightened because he believed the suspect was trying to get into the vehicle, hurt him and take his vehicle. The victim said he "dropped the clutch" and maneuvered his vehicle so he did not strike the suspect with his car, and then fled the scene, calling 911. The victim stated the suspect never struck the vehicle with the liquor bottle, the report states. There was no damage to the victim's vehicle.

The suspect was arrested and taken to jail for suspicion of attempted robbery. Bail: $40,000.
