Sparks man identified in Sunday fatal crash on I-580 in Reno
The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified a Sparks man who died in a crash that happened Sunday night on I-580 between Mill Street and Plumb Lane in Reno.
Derrick Deion Thomas, 27, was driving a Dodge Dart that was involved in the crash in which he died of injuries at the scene, said NHP Trooper Matthew McLaughlin.
A preliminary NHP investigation shows the white 2013 Dodge Dart sedan was traveling southbound on I-580, south of Mill Street in the leftmost travel lane. A white 2012 Subaru Impreza Wagon was traveling southbound on I-580, adjacent to the Dodge Dart in the second travel lane from the left.
As the Dodge Dart continued southbound, a Chevrolet flatbed truck towing a Flashing Arrow Board trailer was stopped on the inside shoulder, setting up traffic control. The left front of the Dodge Dart struck the Flashing Arrow Board trailer and subsequently struck the Chevrolet flatbed truck, according to the preliminary investigation.
During the collision, the Dodge Dart also struck the left side of the Subaru Impreza. The Dodge Dart came to rest across the southbound travel lanes of IR-580. Derrick Deion Thomas died as a result of injuries he sustained in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene, said McLaughlin.
An improperly restrained child in the Subaru Impreza sustained minor injuries. Several additional vehicles struck debris that was on the highway as a result of the initial crash. All southbound lanes of Interstate 580 were shut down from 7:30 to 11:15 p.m. Traffic was diverted onto surface streets until the highway was reopened.
