Carson City man jailed after homeowner shoots him in foot for alleged attempted break-in

A 24-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Saturday for suspicion of felony home invasion after being shot in the foot by a homeowner who had attempted to scare the suspect away, according to a sheriff's office booking report.

Moses Aristides Sandoval was arrested at 5:14 a.m. in the 300 block of Corbett Street. According to the booking report, deputies were dispatched to the area for a report of a home invasion in progress. The homeowner informed dispatch they had the suspect on the ground at gunpoint and that they were in the backyard.

Deputies arrived, observed the homeowner and instructed him to make his way to other deputies. The male suspect was located on the ground, bleeding from the face and was on the ground at a back-sliding door. Moses, who had a strong odor of alcohol on his person, was placed into handcuffs and escorted out of the backyard. He was read his Miranda warning and stated he would be willing to speak.

He was asked what happened. Moses stated he had been in a fight with his buddies earlier that night and that's where the face injuries were from. When asked what he was doing in the backyard of the Corbett Street residence, the man stated he thought he was still at a downtown Carson City bar.

Officers made contact with the homeowner who stated he was awakened by a noise at his back-sliding door. He went to see what was going on and observed Moses forcefully trying to open the door. He stated he ordered the man to stop and leave. He stated each time he ordered the man to leave, he continued to attempt to open the back sliding glass door.

The homeowner stated he retrieved his .22 caliber pistol and showed it to the suspect, who continued attempting to gain access through the sliding door. He then stated he fired one round out of the gun into a doggie door to scare the male subject away, the arrest report states.

The homeowner stated after he fired the single round he went around to the backyard and confronted the male subject, ordering him to the ground. He stated he kicked the male subject in the face and attempted to keep the man down before deputies arrived on scene.

The suspect was taken to Carson Tahoe Hospital for medical clearance. A single gunshot was discovered on the top of his left foot. The single gunshot was the warning shot fired by the homeowner, according to the booking report.

The suspect was medically cleared and taken to jail. He was booked for home invasion, a felony offense. Bail: $25,000.

In other arrests:
— A 51-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, being in violation of bail conditions and two misdemeanor offenses.

David Anthony Salazar was taken into custody in the area of Carson and Hot Springs Road at 1:15 p.m. He was also arrested for two misdemeanor offenses: open container and violation of pre-trial supervision.

A 33-year-old man with Salazar was subsequently also booked for suspicion of driving on a suspended registration and open container.

According to the arrest report, a Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team deputy made a traffic stop on a vehicle that didn't have front or back license plates or front window temporary registration. During the traffic stop, the officer observed open beer containers in the vehicle, the vehicle registration was suspended and learned both men had outstanding warrants.

A K9 alerted positive on the vehicle. A deputy located a clear plastic bag with 5 white tablets that were identified as vicodin/hydrocodone. The baggie was located on Salazar's seat. Both men were arrested. Salazar's bail was placed on hold for the violation of bail conditions charge. Bail for the 33-year-old man for the misdemeanor offenses: $304.

— A 60-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday in the area of Mountain Street and Tahoe Drive for misdemeanor second offense suspicion of DUI.

According to the arrest report, deputies were called to the area for a report of a non-injury accident. Dispatch advised the reporting party indicated the driver of one of the vehicle's involved appeared intoxicated.

Deputies arrived and found the male driver standing with Carson City firefighters and observed he had a difficult time standing on his own and was unsteady on his feet. While being assisted by fire department personnel he exhibited slow, slurred speech, had red bloodshot eyes and smelled of both alcohol and marijuana.

He told deputies he had earlier had smoked marijuana and consumed a few alcoholic drinks. He stated he had three beers and smoked marijuana 4 to 5 hours earlier. He volunteered to take standardized field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment.

He provided a preliminary breath test with a result of .372 and was taken into custody and taken to Carson Tahoe hospital for medical clearance. He consented to a blood draw. A criminal history check on the man showed he pled guilty to a DUI in 2019. Bail: $2,637.

— A 20-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday in the 1100 block of Woodside Drive for three misdemeanor contempt of court warrants. Bail: $9,000.
