Transient man arrested for failing to register after harassing grocery store customers

—A 57-year-old transient man was arrested in the parking lot of a Carson City grocery store early Friday morning on the charge of an ex-felon failing to register.

Deputies were called to the grocery store on reports of an intoxicated male harassing customers. When the man was asked to leave by employees, the man took a shopping cart for personal use and attempted to leave the property with the cart.

The store supervisor spoke with deputies and told them the man was dropped off by a taxi in the parking lot, due to not having any money to pay for the ride. While the man was inside the store, he began yelling at other customers in the store. Once the man flipped off another customer inside the store, he was asked to leave by security.

The supervisor did not wish to press charges, but requested the deputies tell the man to leave the property.

This was the sixth call for service of the evening under similar circumstances of an intoxicated male harassing and yelling at people he came into contact with.

Deputies located the man on the west side of the store with a shopping cart full of his personal belongings.

According to the police report, when the man observed the police car pull up, he immediately put both of his hands in his pockets. Deputies instructed him to keep his hands out of his pockets. He took his hands out, but quickly put them back in, and so deputies placed him in handcuffs.

Dispatch advised deputies that the man had a lengthy criminal history. He had also registered as a sex offender on October 15. His last ex-felon registration address was made in 2001.

Deputies questioned the male how long he had been in Carson City. The man said he had just made it back to the area after living in Hawaii for several years. He said he posted bail in Tahoe on October 14, and had been in Carson City for three days.

Deputies asked him where he was registered as an ex-felon. The man said he did not need to register as an ex-felon, as his sex offender registration took care of both. Deputies informed him he still needed to register as an ex-felon regardless of his sex offender status.

The man was taken into custody on the charge of an ex-felon failing to register, and was booked without incident.

Bail: $242

—A 58-year-old transient man was arrested late Wednesday evening in the 1900 block of N. Carson Street for three counts of violating a restraining order.

According to the police report, deputies were patrolling the area of a local Casino when they noticed a male and female pushing a shopping cart through the parking lot. The reporting deputy recognized the couple who were walking together.

Deputies conducted a warrants check on the two people, and the man returned with three Temporary Protection Orders, one of which was issued out of El Dorado County, Calif., the second out of San Diego County, Calif. Two were in effect until 2021, the other 2020.

Deputies located the couple, who were walking together in the area of Safe Street and Hot Springs Road. They had walked one block north of where they were originally seen, and appeared to the deputy that they were walking together and had no intention of separating from each other.

Deputies placed the man in custody for violating three protection orders. The man became upset and told the deputy he had just been released earlier that day from the Douglas County Jail for violation of the protection orders.

He was booked without incident.

Deputies conducted a traffic stop, and reported smelling a “distinct odor of burnt marijuana.”

The man was the only occupant in the vehicle, and gave deputies his id, along with a glass pipe which was in his left front shirt pocket.

Dispatch confirmed he was under alternative sentencing supervision, and his driver’s license was indefinitely suspended for DUI and demerits. The Department of Alternative Sentencing placed a hold on the man for violation of bail conditions. He was arrested and booked into the Carson City Jail.
