Carson City arrests: Man booked in scheme involving returned cameras for store credit
A 60-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of obtaining money under false pretenses and larceny, both misdemeanor offenses, a Carson City sheriff's booking report states.
According to the arrest report, a deputy was dispatched to a sporting goods store in the 1400 block of South Carson Street regarding a larceny. The deputy met with a loss prevention employee who stated that on Sept. 28, 8:17 p.m. he observed a subject come into the store.
He stated the subject selected two wilderness cameras valued at $259.98 total and walked to the register. He stated the subject "returned" the items to the store. Since the subject obviously did not have a receipt, the store gave him a card with the amount listed for store credit, stating the subject then purchased 10 other items using the card for an amount of $259.98 and there was a remainder of $35.51 that he paid in cash.
The employee stated the subject left the store. The loss prevention employee showed the deputy video of the incident and stated the same subject was arrested in Reno in a similar situation. The employee stated he received a copy of the subject's photo from Reno's loss prevention and stated he was able to identify the male subject.
Deputies learned the suspect was in custody at Carson City Jail. The deputy went to the jail and asked the suspect if he would like to speak. The man agreed to do so and was read his Miranda warning and he signed a waiver. The man confirmed that he had indeed taken the cameras and turned them in for store credit, although he denied purchasing other items. He stated his friend had purchased the items. He was booked on the alleged offenses. Bail: $1,489.
