Carson City man jailed for felony battery in bat and sword attack at North Carson motel
A 33-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Sunday for suspicion of battery with a deadly weapon and mayhem, both felonies, possession of a deadly weapon and drawing a deadly weapon in a threatening manner, a sheriff’s deputy said.
Joel Urquiza was taken into custody at 12:57 a.m. in the 1700 block of North Carson Street. According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to a report of a battery with a deadly weapon at a motel in the 1700 block of North Carson Street.
Deputies arrived and detained the suspect. The victim was bleeding heavily from a large gash on the forehead. The victim pointed out that he was battered by Urquiza with a large baseball bat. The victim stated he was hit in the head and then, putting his hands up, was struck again, the arrest report states.
The victim ran to the motel room to get away from the suspect, who used the door and attempted to gain entry to the residence. The victim was able to shut and lock his door, the arrest report states. Inside, the man’s significant other contacted law enforcement.
While the deputy was photographing the scene, he located a large Katana sword, with blood on the blade that belonged to the suspect. Urquiza was read his Miranda rights and agreed to speak about the incident. He stated that he had used the Katana sword against the victim, the arrest report states.
The victim was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. Bail for the suspect: $63,137.
In other arrests:
— A 51-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of possession of a dangerous drug without a prescription, a gross misdemeanor, and three misdemeanors: ex-felon failing to register, wrongful possession of a cart, and soliciting a motorist.
According to the arrest report, a deputy was called to the area for a report of a man standing in the middle of the crosswalk, possibly taking off his shorts.
The deputy arrived and made contact with the man who matched the description. He stated he was having a problem with his back when he was trying to cross the road. He said he was in possession of a shopping cart, which had his clothes and several backpacks inside. He had a sign on the cart that stated he was homeless and that anything helps, the arrest report states.
He stated he isn’t asking people for money but people have been giving him money. He was asked where he had gotten the shopping cart. He said he purchased it for $15. He stated he had been in Carson City for four days and that he was from Los Angeles. He was checked through dispatch for wants and warrants. Dispatch returned with several felony convictions with two being assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily harm, according to the arrest report.
The man was arrested for being an ex-felon failing to register, soliciting to motorists and wrongful possession of a shopping cart. While conducting inventory of the man’s property, the arresting officer located 12 pills that required a prescription that were not in a prescription bottle. Bail: $3,232.
— A 31-year-old Reno man was arrested Saturday, 11:59 p.m. in the area of North Carson and Medical Parkway for suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and lesser charges, a sheriff’s deputy said.
According to the arrest report, a deputy was dispatched to the area regarding a possible DUI driver. The reporting party (RP) had followed a red Toyota truck that had reportedly struck a curb twice, failed to maintain a lane and ran a red light. The reporting party continued to follow the red Toyota to a convenience store parking lot at North Carson and Medical parkway.
The deputy located the vehicle and followed it as it traveled eastbound on Medical Parkway toward North Carson and observed the truck stop past the limit line and entered the crosswalk at the intersection. The truck then conducted an improper left turn entering the No. 2 and bike lanes. The deputy initiated a traffic stop. The man identified himself with a license, the arrest report states.
The deputy observed signs he had been drinking. The man stated he recently consumed two beers prior to driving. He agreed to voluntarily consent to standardized field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment throughout the test battery. He provided a preliminary breath sample of .182 and was arrested for suspicion of DUI. At jail he consented to voluntary evidentiary breath tests with results of .162 and .149. He also faces charges for improper turn and stopping past the limit line. Bail: $1,381.
— A 29-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Saturday, 12:42 p.m. in the area of Six Mile Canyon Road on a confirmed failure to appear traffic warrant issued April 6, 2018 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $855.
— A 37-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 11:59 p.m. in the area of Fifth and Saliman Road for a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant issued out of Douglas County. Bail: $1,000.
