Western Nevada College celebrates National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week

In partnership with the Coalition on Adult Basic Education, Western Nevada College’s Adult Education program invites you to celebrate National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, September 19-23.
To recognize the accomplishments of adult education and family literacy students, Western Nevada College’s ACCEL College and Career Readiness program will be featuring student stories and adult education information on social media (@accelwnc).
More than 30 million Americans older than 25 — or one out of every 10 U.S. citizens — do not have a high school diploma. The ACCEL College and Career Readiness Program at WNC is working to change that.
Since 2006, WNC has provided instruction to more than 6,500 adult education learners and 702 adults have earned the high school equivalency (GED or HiSET). From the latter total, 168 adults earned their HSE in 2019 just prior to and through the outset of the COVID-19 shutdown. ACCEL serves an average of 450 students per fiscal year in English language learning, high school equivalency preparation and workplace readiness classes.
Research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that job growth for individuals without a high school diploma or some college experience is about zero or even negative.
By 2024, 48 percent of job openings will be middle-skill and 32 percent will be high-skill. This means that in less than 3 years, nearly 80 percent of all job openings will require more than a high school degree. Adults who participate in the ACCEL program have the opportunity to explore career pathways and hone their skills so that they can advance their careers through postsecondary education or training.
Registration is easy to complete from a computer or on a mobile device. Go to accel.wnc.edu/register and complete the online application. This application may also be completed at ACCEL’s office located at Western Nevada College, 2201 W. College Parkway in the Bristlecone Building, Room 340. Once the application is complete, a team member from the ACCEL office will reach out to answer questions and discuss the next steps.
Adult education programs serve adults who need to improve their basic literacy and math skills, improve their oral and written English, obtain a high school equivalence degree, and prepare for postsecondary education or training.
