Carson City skaters shred Mills Park during 3rd annual competition, winners announced
Carson City skateboarders and scooter-riders participated in the third annual skate competition hosted by Carson City Parks and Recreation, Carson City's Wheelhouse and Tahoe's Woodward.
Kids, families and spectators circled the skatepark Saturday while participants riding either skateboards or scooters tore through the cement park. Some skaters cruised calmly during their warmups, while others had looks of consternation across their faces as they bent their knees and angled their bodies to land a trick just right.
As one 8-year-old contestant on a skateboard attempted to axel stall on the small ramp, at least three or four times without success, his small face began to look frustrated and exhausted, but never embarrassed. However, every time he got back on his board, the crowd let out a cheer and a burst of applause.
The announcer said, "I think they want to see it bud, let's try one more time."
That time, he landed it, and the crowd roared in approval. The skater jumped off his board with his fist in the air, a huge grin across his face, before vacating the park for the next competitor.
Over 100 skaters registered for the competition, said Parks and Recreation coordinator Scott Chapman, from every age group.
"This year, we were able to set up flood lights so we could continue the competition past dark," said Chapman. "That way everyone has enough time."
The competitors ranged in age from 8 year olds into adults, and were categorized into beginner, intermediate and advanced, with a separate "Best Trick" competition.
