Department of Defense recognizes Nevada employers for assistance, support to veterans
The U.S. Department of Defense office recently recognized Nevada employers for their outstanding service and support to Silver State veterans with their Seven Seals Award.
Award presentations were held to recognize, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Veteran’s Employment and Training Services, the U.S. Veterans Initiative Program and the Henderson JobConnect and its Disabled Veteran Outreach Program.
“I am humbled and honored to be nominated and recognized as a DoD Seven Seals Award recipient. I believe all honorees epitomize ”best practices” and showcase an unyielding and dedicated effort in support of the National Guard and Reserve veterans,” said honoree Doreen Owens, Nevada State Director of the U.S. Department of Labor Veteran’s Employment and Training Services.
The Seven Seals Award is given to employers who beyond the legal requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 by providing services and support that go “above and beyond” the mandated requirements. Some of these award winning practices include additional, non-mandated benefits such as differential or full pay to offset lost wages, extended health benefits, hosting care package drives, establishing military support groups, assisting with child care needs and other similar benefits.
USERRA is also the Federal law that establishes rights and responsibilities for members of the National Guard and Reserve and their civilian employers and serves as the legislation supporting ESGR.
The Nevada ESGR is under the leadership of State Committee Chair, Steve Seroka and like its federal counterpart, the Nevada ESGR office seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military services of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States by advocating mutually beneficial initiatives; recognizing outstanding employer support; increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies; resolving potential conflicts between employers and veterans; and acting as the employer’s principal advocate within the U.S. Department of Defense. The office also offers a variety of volunteer opportunities in varied areas. To volunteer visit www.esgr.mil and contact your State Committee.
