UPDATE: Caldor fire containment grows

UPDATE SUNDAY: As of Sunday morning the fire was 218,950 acres and 65 percent contained, according to Cal Fire.

Approximately 10,000 people remain evacuated from their homes in the Caldor Fire zone. Some were allowed back in the West Zone on Friday, but Christmas Valley and North Upper Truckee residents in the East Zone remain evacuated along with many other western areas.

There is no timeline for any of those still evacuated, but fire officials said they hope to give residents good news in a few days.

As of Friday night, the Caldor Fire remains at 218,459 acres and 53 percent contained.

Homes in over 99 percent of the burned areas have been accessed for damage, according to the Calfire press information officer. According to the El Dorado County Sheriff's property map, one cabin was destroyed and another damaged in the Rainbow Tract of Christmas Valley.

The rain overnight helped with moisture on the fire, but fuels will quickly dry out, according to those speaking at tonight's community meeting. The rain was not a fire season ending event but gave them opportunity to work on mopping up the fire and buttoning up containment lines.

There were eight lightning starts in El Dorado County overnight, four on each side of the fire with one of those in Glenbrook, Nev., and the others on the West Shore. All are being addressed and contained.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. CalFire Law Enforcement officers announced two separate fire-related arrests were made in Amador County on Thursday. An adult male, Zachary Hensley, was arrested for allegedly starting a fire recklessly in the area of SR88 and Dalton Road and a woman, Debra Smith, on suspicion of starting a series of fires in the community of Plymouth. Both were booked into the Amador County Jail and are not connected to the Caldor Fire, law enforcement said.

East Zone

The Red Flag Warning kept fire crews on high alert throughout the day and prepared for initial attack in case the lightning ignited any new fires. Helicopters working on the Caldor Fire did support local fire agencies Friday, responding to five new fire starts which were all quickly contained. Although some rain did fall during the morning, the precipitation was
barely measurable and did not put the fire out. The strong winds that accompanied the storms, gusts from 40 to 60 mph, quickly dried out fuels again and tested containment lines.

Additional resources joined yesterday’s forces north of Strawberry Creek to complete containment line and suppress several small spot fires in this area where the fire continues to be active due to heavy fuels (standing and downed dead trees killed prior to the fire).

Hotshots also worked north of Luther Spire where fire behavior was testing the containment line. Fire Use Modules continued to complete hand line in the Wilderness and crews held line and mopped up adding depth around Lower and Upper Echo Lakes.

Helicopters were able to fly much of Friday, helping extinguish hot spots and support ground efforts.

West Zone

Despite recent precipitation, fire activity remained active throughout fire area. In addition to addressing the utility hazards across the incident, crews continue to mitigate approximately 5,000 hazard trees between Kyburz and Echo Summit in an effort to create an area safe for repopulation. Tonight, firefighters will actively patrol seeking out heat and continuing mop up. A Red Flag Warning is in effect through 11:00 p.m. for gusty winds.

"We're doing everything we can to get the highway back open," said fire officials during the daily 5:00 p.m. community meeting on Friday.

Three cars, one on top of another, have been dumped illegally along East 6th Avenue in Sun Valley and deputies investigating the dumping are asking the public for any information that will help identify and locate the person or persons responsible.

UPDATE 11:27 a.m.: the fire appears to be located at the base of the water tower in Mound House in the northern foothills.

Around 10:30 a.m. a bloom of smoke could be seen coming from Lyon County.

Just after 11 a.m. Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon confirmed Carson City firefighters were assisting in controlling the fire.

It’s exact location is unknown at this time. Updates to follow.

A 26-year-old Carson City woman was arrested in the 800 block of N. Carson Street for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and child endangerment.

The Carson City Parks and Recreation department will host an interpretive hike tonight, September 14 from 6:00-8:00 pm.

This is the third annual Full Moon Sunset Hike. Hikers will be starting from the Koontz Lane Trailhead at Prison Hill and will be hiking up to the top to watch the Sunset over Carson.

A break will be had to rest and take photos and appreciate the sunset. Later, attendees will hike back down under the full moon.

Hikers will need to bring layers, close-toed shoes, a flashlight or headlamp, and plenty of water.

Nevada Highway Patrol reported a fatal head-on crash Saturday morning on Highway 95A and Lyon County MM 27 (Wabuska). Two fatalities were confirmed, and both lanes were shut down while the fatal team was enroute.

As of 9:05 a.m., all travel lanes opened.

The names of the deceased and circumstances of the deaths have not been released as of yet.

Help drive out hunger at the inaugural Fall Harvest Golf Classic! The tournament takes place Saturday, October 19th at the Dayton Valley Golf Course.

Hosted by Js’ Old Town Bistro and Duncan Golf Management, all proceeds benefit the Dayton Food Pantry, part of the Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties.

The Dayton Food Pantry provides food to more than 500 people a month, more than half of which are children and seniors. The Pantry also provides weekend meals to more than 200 school children through its Backpack Program.

Fremont Elementary and local dignitaries hosted a Ribbon Cutting ceremony Friday, Sept. 13, to celebrate the newly added classrooms and square footage completed from construction over the summer.

The ceremony also helped kick off the school's annual Fall Festival where dozens of community partners, sponsors and the school offered information, food, a raffle with over 30 prizes, and tons of fun for students and families.

Presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders visited Carson City Friday and hosted a Town Hall in the gymnasium of the Carson City Community Center.

The senator spoke on several topics including health care, Wall Street, the criminal justice system, and more.

First responders were called to the area of John and Roop on a multiple vehicle accident.

According to dispatch the driver of the vehicle may have suffered a heart attack while operating his vehicle and crashed into several other vehicles.

Motorists should avoid the area if possible. One lane is currently blocked by responders.

Hello fellow anglers. We have a few things going on in our local area. For anglers that fish Topaz Lake, you have until the end of the month to wet a line. As of October 1st, the lake will be closed until January 1, 2020. There is some speculation into next years fishing season.

A minimum-security inmate that walked away from the Stewart Conservation Camp on August 18 has been recaptured as of Sept. 11.

According to the Nevada Department of Corrections, James Park, 50, was arrested Wednesday just after 10 p.m. after a confrontation with a security guard at an RV park in Reno.

According to the police report, two teenagers were arrested in a store parking lot in the 1900 block of N. Carson Street for engaging in a physical altercation while a two-month-old infant between them.

A 19-year-old transient man and an 18-year-old transient woman were booked on child neglect/endangerment and domestic battery first after several concerned citizens called deputies to respond to a fight. The reporting parties stated there was a man and a woman physically fighting in the parking lot and pulling an infant from each other during the fight.

The Ormsby House is now in escrow and the new owner has some interesting plans for what to do with Carson City's historic building.

The intersection at Robinson and Saliman is, for the majority of the day, reasonable and quick to get through. However, in the thirty minutes before Carson High School classes begin, and the thirty minutes after school lets out, it is one of the most frustrating intersections in the capital city.

There are nine lanes of traffic that have to navigate the four-way stop signs at this intersection, plus the hundreds of students using all four crosswalks.

On Thursday afternoon, ten minutes prior to school letting out at 2 p.m. and ending at 2:20 p.m., I observed the following:

Dozens of hot rods will roll into Carson City next week for the 9th annual Rockabilly Riot held at Mills Park. The event originally got its start in Reno but will be hosted for the 4th time here in Carson City.

A new Italian restaurant is reported to be taking the place of the Martin Hotel in Carson City after the Winnemucca-based basque restaurant closes up shop in late September.

The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified a 92-year-old Carson City woman who died in a vehicle crash Tuesday evening on Highway 50 East and Airport Road.

Sen. Bernie Sanders will return to Nevada on Friday, Sept. 13 to host a town hall in Carson City, followed by a rally at the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in locating a suspect allegedly involved in elder exploitation. The suspect used an elderly woman's debit card, made several purchases and withdrew several hundred dollars in cash.

Several hundred made their way Wednesday evening to the 9-11 Memorial at Mills Park for a remembrance of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorists attacks on American soil, paying tribute to those who lost their lives with words, song, prayer and hope.
