2018 Nevada Excellence in Mine Reclamation award winners named

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Excellence in Mine Reclamation Awards for 2018 were presented on September 8, 2019, at the annual Nevada Mining Association Convention in South Lake Tahoe. Five awards were presented this year:

— Coeur Rochester, Inc. received an award for Cooperative Partnership in Preservation of Mining History for contributing a permanent Historic Rochester Mining District exhibit to the Marzen House Museum, and for their thirteen year involvement in the annual Lovelock Cave Days event in Pershing County.

— Lithium Nevada Corp. received an award for Exploration Project Remediation for their exceptional work in reclaiming drill pads and access roads following their Upper Basin Exploration Project in the Montana Mountains in Humboldt County.

— KGHM received an award for Leadership in Reclamation for their work in incorporating creative reclamation controls into new waste facilities, which help mitigate legacy acid mine drainage environmental issues in White Pine County.

— Kinross Gold U.S.A, Inc. has received an award for Leadership in Conservation Planning for voluntarily enrolling into the Nevada Conservation Credit System to mitigate impacts to Greater Sage-grouse and its habitats for its mine expansion at the Bald Mountain Mine in White Pine County.

— Newmont Mining Corp. received an award for Concurrent Reclamation for their innovative work in reclaiming their North Area Leach Facility, Phase I-II, while continuing to operate other parts of the facility, in Eureka County.

“The Goal of the annual State Reclamation Awards is to encourage operators and explorers to submit sound reclamation plans, raise industry standards, and increase public awareness of the positive aspects of mining, and encourage innovation in reclamation techniques. “This year’s award winners met these goals and are to be commended for their efforts,” said Rich Perry, Administrator of the Nevada Division of Minerals. “By sharing their work with others, the Nevada Mining and Exploration industries continue to lead the Nation in successful reclamation, community partnerships, and environmental protection practices.”

This is the 27th year of the Nevada Excellence in Mine Reclamation Awards. The awards committee consists of representatives from the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, the Nevada Department of Wildlife, the Bureau of Land Management, the United States Forest Service and the Division of Minerals. In order to receive an award, the Committee must unanimously vote that the submission or nomination is above and beyond what is mandated, and is a worthy example to share with others in the industry.

DAYTON — On Saturday, Sept. 9, more than a dozen communities throughout Nevada are participating in the annual Walk in Memory — Walk for Hope event. The goal of the event is to increase awareness of the effects suicide has on our nation and state, and to remember those who have been lost to suicide.

UPDATE SUNDAY, 9:10AM: A man who was stabbed Saturday evening and sustained a moderate to serious knife wound was flown to the trauma ward at a Reno hospital. His condition is unknown at this time. He is expected to live. It is unknown at this time if he remains in the hospital. No arrests have been made and no charges have been filed, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Nate Brehm. The matter remains under investigation.

An assortment of hunting breeds have gathered at Fuji Park in South Carson City to participate in the Battle Born Ratacular Barn Hunt, presented by Revolution Dog Sports.

A 48 year-old Carson City woman was taken into custody Friday night at 7:25 p.m. in the 2000 block of College Parkway after allegedly injuring her boyfriend with a kitchen knife, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said.

UPDATE 11:30AM: Acccording to the National Wildfire Coordinating Group web site provided by the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center, the Slinkard Fire has officially burned more than 7,880 acres and is currently about 20 percent contained at this hour.
More than 600 firefighting personnel are on scene, including 15 crews, four helicopters, 56 engines, two bulldozers, and 11 water tenders.
U.S. Highway 395 is reported to be open in both directions. However, both the Nevada and California highway patrols remain on scene to monitor the situation.

The Slinkard Fire near Topaz Lake has grown to about 9,000 acres in size, but firefighters have achieved at least 10 percent containment on the blaze as of about 9 a.m. Saturday morning, according updated reports from all three major television news stations in Reno.

CARSON CITY — The crews aboard two Nevada Army Guard UH-60L Black Hawk helicopters will begin firefighting efforts Friday at the Slinkard Fire at Topaz Lake near the Nevada and California state border.

A 33-year-old Carson City man and a current jail inmate was served Thursday with a Douglas County warrant alleging multiple counts of sexual crimes with a child under the age of 14, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

A brush fire behind a house on Cabrolet Drive on the west side of Carson City was quickly knocked down by firefighters late Friday morning.

The fire was reported at around 11 a.m. in the 1200 block of Cabrolet and burned into brush and a fence, putting up smoke and flames before firefighters knocked it down. It was fully extinguished at 11:41 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A 38-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday for felony suspicion of grand larceny after he admitted to stealing a commercial refrigeration compressor from a market Tuesday and returned the following day to allegedly steal more items, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
