Carson City deputies arrest suspect after allegedly using stun gun on employee, stealing air soft guns, walkie-talkies and pet food
A 24-year-old was arrested in the 3200 block of Market Street for use of a stun gun other than in self defense, a felony, as well as petit larceny and resisting a public officer.
According to the report, Matthew Jan Nowak was arrested after deputies were dispatched to a local big box store on report of an assault with a deadly weapon.
According to dispatch, a person had been stopped by a loss prevention officer for stealing items from the store. The employee then advised the person produced a stun gun and “sparked it” at the employee. The employee backed away and the person left the store on foot.
Deputies arrived on scene and noticed two men on their cell phones near the intersection of Market Street and Retail Drive, and deputies asked if they were the reporting party, which they said they were. They pointed out a person wearing grey shorts and a green t-shirt near the Starbucks.
Deputies stopped their vehicle and the person began walking quickly away. Deputies instructed the person to stop, and they began running through the Starbucks’ drive-thru towards College Parkway.
Deputies lost visual of the person in the shrubs and bushes surrounding the drive-thru.
Drivers stopped at the red light of the intersection got the deputies’ attention and pointed out the person running across College Parkway toward a gas station. The person lost their shoes while running across the roadway.
Deputies went to the gas station and asked the clerk if they’d seen a person matching the description. The clerk pointed toward the restroom.
Deputies went to the locked bathroom and announced themselves, and a short time later, the person who had ran from them came out. Deputies told the person to turn around, but they refused and started to make a phone call.
Deputies pointed their taser at the person because they could see a pocket knife attached to their belt loop. The person refused to turn around and follow instructions, according to the report, and deputies took control of their arms and placed their hands behind their back.
Deputies located a stun gun in the trash can of the bathroom where it was retrieved.
The person identified themselves as Matthew Nowak and gave their date of birth.
Dispatch reviewed security footage from the store and witnessed Nowak place two air rifles in their shopping cart and remove the security wrap from a set of two-way radios. They then selected a 30-pound bag of dog food and a 30-pound bag of cat food which were placed the shopping cart.
Nowak then walked past all points of final sale where his cart was blocked by an employee. Nowak then drew a stun gun and sparked it as they approached the employee.
The employee advised Nowak stole items totaling $284.88.
They were taken into custody without issue.
