Costco employee in unknown condition following crushing incident Thursday
On Thursday, first responders were dispatched to the Carson City Costco following a serious injury involving an employee who was apparently crushed by a malfunctioning steel door.
According to one customer who wished to have their name withheld from the story, they witnessed the incident while getting their receipts checked at the exit.
They said while they were at the exit, they heard a loud metal screeching and looked up to see one of the sides of the garage-style roll up doors had either broken or come loose from its track.
A moment later, the door dropped completely accompanied by even more loud screeching, and people began screaming. The customer and their family ran towards the commotion, and the customer's husband found an employee was being crushed under the door.
"He stood right over the poor kid and helped lift the door off of his neck," the customer said. "My husband said that from what he saw the door came down, knocked (the employee) over and smashed his face on the cement pillar on the way down. My husband was absolutely shocked he was still alive."
Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon had no updates about the employee's condition, but gave a similar account:
"He was an employee, it appears he was in the process of closing the garage style roll up doors when one of the doors appeared to fail and rapidly close on him, trapping him under the door until bystanders were able to remove him."
We with update on news of his condition when more information is available.
