Evacuation shelters fill in Carson City, evacuees told to go to Reno-Sparks Convention Center

Gardener’s heaven! That’s what I feel when I visit a botanical garden. Last week we went to the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens at Fort Bragg, California. It’s not simply the plants that put me over the top. It’s seeing what is done with the design: how the textures and shapes go together; how the colors are coordinated for complement and contrast.

On Saturday, May 25, starting at 9:00 in front of the Capitol building on North Carson Street, the Carson City Historical Society will be offering a 90-minute walking tour to view historic sites east of N. Carson Street, starting with the Capitol Mall area.

Sites will include the Capitol and the Capitol Mall, the Charles Friend Park, the historic area called Chinatown, the old Armory, the site of the former Nevada Orphans Home, the early racetrack and location of the Corbett-Fitzsimmons fight, and more.

Baily's Pond in South Carson hosted a free Kids Fishing Day Saturday to encourage young anglers into the sport of fishing.

The pond was stocked and ready for the little reelers to catch their dinners for the night. A cleaning station was available on site to help with getting their fish ready to take home.

Get in the Act Theater Camp is celebrating its 19th summer of providing aspiring young performers to the magical world of theater.

Camp locations are at Dayton Community Center, June 24-28, grades 3-7, 9 a.m. to noon and the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City, July 8-12, Grades Kindergarten through grade 3 from 9 a.m. to noon; tuition is $125.

A 31-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the area of N. Carson Street an Adams Street for suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance, attempting to destroy or conceal evidence, possession of drug paraphernalia, and two contempt of court warrants out of Carson City Justice Court.

Coming to Carson City on Friday, May 17, the Brewery Arts Center Celtic Series features The Sophie & Fiachra Trio who will perform in the Maizie Harris Jesse Theatre.

The Sophie & Fiachra Trio are a group of “musiciens sans frontieres' who refuse to let the Atlantic sunder their love of their own and one another’s Irish and Québecois musical traditions.”

Comprising of Irish uilleann piper Fiachra O’Regan, Québec fiddler/singer Sophie Lavoie, and guitarist André Marchand, the trio take traditional Irish and Québécois traditional music, blended with Lavoie’s “lithe and masterful” compositions. Their choice of songs will “captivate the most casual listener”

You won’t want to miss hearing The Belle Sounds, an indie pop-rock band from Austin Texas. The five-member band is sure to entertain you with its three part harmonies, soaring melodies and lush sonic sounds.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Single lane closures will take place on U.S. 50 in eastern Carson City May 14-16 as the Nevada Department of Transportation fills roadway cracking.

The upcoming Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held May 16 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 East William Street.
