State route 28 reopens after 'very old' dynamite found between Sand Harbor and US-50
Dynamite was discovered Monday on State Route 28 near Lake Tahoe's Sand Harbor, forcing the closure of the road for several hours, according to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
The Consolidated Bomb Squad and other agencies responded at 9:36 a.m. to an explosive found after a citizen called Washoe County Sheriff’s Office dispatch saying they had found what appeared to be an explosive along State Route 28 near Mile Marker 1.
Washoe County Sheriff's Office deputies searched the area and located the explosive among pine straw, rocks and trees around 150 feet to the west of the highway. The Consolidated Bomb Squad then used a robot to retrieve the explosive, which was detonated and rendered safe, according to WCSO.
Nothing else was discovered on scene in the investigation and State Route 28 was reopened to traffic at around 3:30 p.m. The explosive appeared to be dynamite that was very old.
This was a multi-agency effort by the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Highway Patrol, FBI-Reno, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, North Tahoe Fire Protection District, Tahoe-Douglas Fire Protection District and Park Rangers.
