Nevada Highway Patrol reports fatal crash on Highway 50 near Dayton

CARSON CITY — Long-time history curator Robert “Bob” Nylen, who retired in 2020 after 36 years with the Nevada State Museum, was named Curator Emeritus on Feb. 2, 2023.

“This is such an honor,” Nylen said. “I couldn’t have even imagined an honor like this being given to me.”

UPDATE 3:18PM: Geiger Grade, State Route 341 is now open with chains or snow tires required. Meanwhile, I-580 from Mt. Rose Highway to Bowers Mansion area, SR 338 and Mt. Rose Highway from Douglas Fir Drive to Fairview Boulevard remain closed.

The Nevada Department of Transportation reports that I-580 is currently closed Tuesday afternoon from the Bowers Mansion area to Mt. Rose Highway (SR 431) due to extremely low visibility, blowing snow and multiple crashes.

Another round of snow and wind returns to the Carson City area and surrounding counties Tuesday and should last through the evening before the brunt of the system begins to move out of the region, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Carson City and Douglas County offices will be closed today, Tuesday, due to ongoing severe winter weather. This closure includes all City offices with the exception of the courthouse and essential public safety services.

On Monday at approximately 10 a.m., Lyon County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to Silverland Middle School in Fernley, Nev., regarding a student possibly in possession of a firearm at school.
