Carson City health department offers 3rd COVID-19 vaccine dose for immunocompromised

Carson City Health and Human Services is now offering a third dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to individuals who are moderately to severely immunocompromised. Third doses will be available at all CCHHS COVID-19 vaccine events for those who meet the criteria as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This does not apply to the single dose Janssen vaccine or to individuals without compromised immune systems.

The CDC recommends people who are moderately to severely immunocompromised should receive an additional dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) after the initial 2 doses.

Studies found that this population may not build the same level of immunity to the 2-dose vaccine series compared to people who are not immunocompromised and may benefit from an additional dose to make sure they have enough protection against COVID-19.

Those eligible to receive a third dose includes, but is not limited to:
— Recipients of organ or stem cell transplants
— People with Advanced or untreated HIV infection
— Active recipients of cancer treatment
— People who taking medications that weaken the immune system
— People with other immune weakening conditions

To receive the third dose, individuals who meet the criteria must bring their COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card or an official printout of their vaccine record from Nevada WebIZ’s portal. Those unable to provide proof of vaccination will not be able to receive their third dose. The third dose must be administered at least 28 days after thesecond dose of Pfizer or Moderna and must be the same vaccine as the first two doses.

This additional dose is different than a “booster” shot. A third dose is recommended for those with compromised immune systems who did not have a strong enough immune response after the initial series was completed. A booster is given to people when the immune response to the primary vaccine series is likely to have waned over time. Currently the CDC does NOT recommend additional doses or booster shots for any other population.

People should talk to their healthcare provider about their medical condition, and whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for them. For more information visit https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/recommendations/immun....
