Carson City arrests: Employee jailed after seen on video stealing cash from gas station
A 34-year-old man was arrested Monday for suspicion of misdemeanor embezzlement, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office report.
At 4:13 p.m. a deputy responded to a gas station in the 1300 block of North Carson for a report of larceny. The deputy met with the reporting party (RP) at the location, who stated a former employee took money out of the cash register and placed the money into his pocket and then left the business.
The RP stated this was the third time the man had taken money from the register or from the bank bag without permission to do so.
In the first incident, the deputy learned the cash drawer was short $150. The reporting party stated the man claimed it was an error with the register. On August 7, he was seen on security camera removing money from the bank bag under the register and putting the money in his pocket. The loss was estimated to be $200.
In an incident August 10, he was seen on security cameras removing a stack of cash from the register. He then entered the office and put the money through a bill counter and placed the money into his left front pants pocket. He then called the reporting party and stated he had an emergency and needed to close the store for approximately 30 minutes.
The RP reviewed the security camera footage seeing that he had taken the money, around $1,100. The RP said she called the man and he admitted to taking the money without permission. She said she worked out a deal where he would repay the money and he returned to the store and gave her $500, the report states. The suspect then provided a written note saying he would repay all the money out of his future paychecks.
He also provided a written note giving his two weeks notice to end his employment at the location. The officer recorded the security camera footage on his body camera and collected the two handwritten notes and a written statement of the incidents.
The suspect was located in the 4500 block of North Carson Street and was read his Miranda warning. He stated he understood his rights and wished to speak. He asked "am I still in trouble if I agreed to pay the money back?" The officer advised him he was and that he was under arrest for misdemeanor embezzlement. Bail: $1,132.
