Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jim Primka to be promoted to lieutenant rank
Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jim Primka has been selected by unanimous agreement to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant, filling the vacancy left by retired Capt. Jeff Melvin, Sheriff Ken Furlong announced Monday.
Sgt. Primka brings to the sworn officers division managers more than 22 years of experience. A U.S. Navy veteran, Primka was originally brought into the Carson City Sheriff’s Office as a reserve deputy sheriff in 1994, and hired in June 1996. His original assignment was to the detention division.
He quickly moved on to the patrol division in February 1997, and then was moved to the detectives division in March 2000. In February 2003, Primka was promoted to the grade of sergeant and placed back in the patrol division in the Watch Commanders role.
Primka is a Carson High School graduate and holds an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Criminal Justice.
He obtained his law enforcement certification with the State of Nevada Peace Officers Standards and Training by attendance at Truckee Meadows Community College in 1995 as a Category I First Responder and Category III Detention Services.
His other state certifications include Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Management certifications, as well as certifications for Instructor and a Supervisory Certificate. Sgt. Primka was selected by managers and graduates of the FBI National Academy in 2017 to attend the National Academy, and successfully completed the international course of instruction in Quantico VA in early 2018.
Assigned to the Operations Division of the Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant Primka has taken on numerous activities and responsibilities to successful completion. He has managed the divisions Field Training Officers program, continuously been an active Defensive Tactics Instructor, and embedded himself in the SWAT Team.
Since 2014, Sgt. Primka has been designated by the Sheriff as the SWAT Commander and is responsible for all of the supervisory and management functions of the of the team at the Sheriff’s Office.
As a result of his oversight, Carson City is among the growing number of communities who have integrated Fire Department Paramedics into the SWAT team, who now deploy to emergencies as one seamless team, said Sheriff Furlong.
Sgt. Primka is currently assigned to CCSO's patrol division. He is responsible for the departments SWAT team, is instructor certified, and president of the Carson City Sheriff’s Supervisors Association. In each capacity endeavor, Sergeant Primka has excelled and displayed the highest levels of professionalism, knowledge, and leadership.
Displaying exemplary professionalism both on and off duty, Sgt. Primka has been very active in youth activities as a coach and mentor.
"His on and off duty activities bring great credit to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office," said Sheriff Furlong.
Promotion ceremonies are scheduled for August 16 at 2 p.m. in the Ormsby Room of the Sheriff’s Office.
