Carson City sheriff identifies suspect shot dead in hostage standoff involving infant
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong has released the identity of the deceased suspect involved in Saturday’s hostage incident involving and infant.
The suspect is verified to be Cortney Ronald Staley, 33. Staley, the biological father of the infant, was killed during an exchange of gunfire with Carson City Sheriff’s SWAT at approximately 8:50 p.m.
The Sheriff’s Office reports prior contacts with Staley on August 1, 2018, as a precaution to officers. Reports show Staley as having aggressive tendencies toward his spouse, along with delusional and suicidal tendencies.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong also reports Staley had an extensive criminal history.
— July 12, 2019 Staley pled guilty to assault with a deadly weapon and was in pre-sentencing status and was scheduled to be interviewed on August 6, 2019, by Parole and Probation for a pre-sentence report for sentencing by Nye County District Judge.
— Staley had been arrested in Nye County in November of 2018 for assault with deadly weapons, firearms offensives and possession of stolen property.
— On March 15, 2018 Staley received a traffic citation in Carson City.
— On Feb. 1, 2018 Staley was a subject of a dispute in Carson City.
On Oct. 19, 2016 Staley was a subject of a domestic dispute in Carson City.
On Jan. 20, 2012 Staley was in custody as a weekender in the Carson City Jail for an out of county offense.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate this incident. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is working directly with the deceased’s family members to arrange resources and services which will provide victim advocacy support, housing, protective services, and residential recovery, during their time in need. The infant hostage has no injuries as a result of Saturday night’s incident. Our condolences to the families and friends affected by Saturday’s unfortunate circumstances.
