Woman arrested after Highway 395 chase with NHP that went from Carson City to California
A police chase that began Tuesday morning on Highway 395 and Eastlake in Carson City ended near Bordertown in California north of the state line with the arrest of a Reno woman, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Melanie Marnne-Lawson, 53, was arrested after the vehicle pursuit, which began at around 9:30 a.m. and reached speeds in excess of 85 mph along Highway 395, said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson. The chase began after a hit and run accident happened on Highway 395 and Eastlake in Carson City where a dark green Dodge pickup truck had rear ended another vehicle and fled the scene.
NHP Troopers in the Reno area attempted to locate the vehicle and found it northbound on Highway 395 in South Reno. The driver of the vehicle failed to yield or stop for all law enforcement units. The green pickup lead NHP officers on a vehicle pursuit that reached speeds in excess of 85 miles per hour along Highway 395.
During the pursuit the dodge pickup was failing to drive in one lane but did not cause any other accidents. Commercial units from NHP were conducting inspections at the Bordertown check site and set up to deploy stop sticks in efforts to end the pursuit. When the pursuit reached Bordertown the Dodge pickup ran over the stop sticks but continued northbound on Highway 395 with several NHP units following. During this time the speeds of the pursuit dropped to approximately 35 miles per hour
NHP troopers were continuously monitoring the traffic, speeds and roadway conditions throughout the pursuit and to eliminate any motorists being affected by the pursuit. As the pursuit went to the state line into California, NHP got authorization to continue the pursuit into California. Once in California NHP attempted several times to immobilize the pickup truck. The pickup, which was now driving on three flat tires, was forced into a skid where it went into the center median and became stuck.
NHP Troopers were able to extract the lone female driver out of the vehicle and placed her into custody without any resistance. The female driver, Marnne-Lawson, was arrested by the California Highway Patrol for possible driving under the influence and eluding. She could face charges out of Nevada to include hit and run from an accident, reckless driving and eluding.
