Carson City children's museum remains closed; board announces plans to ask community for path forward
Following the arrest of the father whose family was allegedly living inside of the Northern Nevada Children's Museum after a toddler wandered into traffic and guns and cannabis were discovered inside, the board of the children's museum stated the facility would be closed for one week.
During that time, they said, the museum would be deep cleaned, a new manager would be hired, and the board would determine a new path forward.
However, nearly a month later, the museum has remained closed.
On Wednesday, a message from the board sent to those who hold memberships indicated that closure could continue for some time, but that the board would be sending out a survey to community members asking for input.
The message is as follows:
To all of our valued members and visitors to the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada, we would like to offer our most sincere apologies for the incident that came to light on June 30, and our utmost appreciation for your patience while we work through our reopening plan.
Please note that we will extend your membership for the time period we are closed to ensure you receive full value for your membership.
We are looking into the best path to reopen in a way that not only assures the safety of our visitors but that we as a community can be proud of as well.
For that, we will need your input. Please watch for our upcoming Community Needs Assessment Survey. This survey will give you the opportunity to tell us what you’d like to see from your museum.
Thank you for your patience and support during this trying time for all of us.
Nathan Tobey
President, Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada Board of Directors
It is not clear how long the board intends to keep the museum closed. We will update with more information as it becomes available.
