Carson City jobless rate nudges up to 10.1 percent in June

Carson City's unemployment rate rose to 10.1 percent in June, after falling to 9.5 percent a month earlier, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reports Friday. Statewide, the jobless rate went up slightly to a seasonally adjusted 9.6 percent.
Carson City and Las Vegas, which also registered a 10.1 percent unemployment rate, are the two metro areas in the state with the highest unemployment figures.
Job growth in June came in higher than anticipated, with the end result being a seasonally adjusted gain of 3,700 over the month, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for the state's unemployment division.
The Reno/Sparks metro area recorded a rate of 9.8 percent, up from May’s 9.3 percent reading. The over-the-year declines have been at least 1.2 percentage points in all three metro areas. Elko’s rate was six percent, up from 5.2 percent last month, and down from 6.2 percent in June of last year.
Job levels in Nevada have risen by 2.1 percent, amounting about 23,600 jobs through the first half of 2013 with growth seen in all major sectors except professional and business services. The leisure and hospitality sector added the most jobs, with payrolls growing by 2.3 percent or 7,400 jobs.
Gov. Brian Sandoval was hopeful about the overall job growth in the state.
“I am pleased that we have now seen job gains, relative to a year ago, in each of the past 30 months,” Sandoval said in a news release. “What’s more, gains have been recorded in nearly all sectors of the economy so far this
year. However, in order to help pave the way for additional improvement, more work remains to be done.”
