Another round of thunderstorms developing in Sierra, may reach western Nevada valleys
Another round of thunderstorms began to move into the Sierra from the south on Sunday afternoon. A National Weather Service forecaster noted the storms could enter into the valley areas of western Nevada into early evening, bringing with them the potential for heavy rain, hail and wind.
Among the potential impact areas are Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley, Virginia City, South Lake Tahoe, Incline Village, Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Bodie, Lee Vining, Twin Lakes, Sonora Pass, Mammoth Lakes, June Lake, Crowley Lake, and Toms Place.
The weather service says we can expect thunderstorms to impact the region though 9 p.m. this evening. The stronger storms will be capable of producing heavy rain, hail, and winds in excess of 40 mph.
Outflow winds pose a danger to boaters and may kick up areas of blowing dust across western Nevada. In the Sierra, hikers should be prepared for a rapid drop in temperature if a thunderstorm nears your location.
The weather service advises those caught in a thunderstorm to seek shelter inside a sturdy structure and stay away from windows. Hikers and campers should seek shelter in a vehicle if possible. If on or near a lake, get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. Don't be caught on the water in a thunderstorm. Strong wind gusts and lightning pose an immediate danger to boaters.
