Gusty winds expected today prompt Red Flag Warning for Sierra Front, Carson City region
Forecasted gusty winds and low humidity has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday for the northern Sierra Front including Carson City, Douglas, Storey, Washoe and Western Lyon counties.
Stronger afternoon winds will create critical fire weather conditions this afternoon and early evening mainly north of I-80, according to weather service forecasters. The Red Flag Warning also covers Surprise Valley, eastern and southern Lassen counties in California.
The combination of gusty winds, low humidity, and dry fuels will cause any fire to rapidly spread before first responders can contain them, the weather service advises. Please exercise extreme caution in order to prevent the start of new wildfires.
Winds will be out of the southwest, 15 to 25 mph with gusts 30 to 40 mph. Humidity will be between 0 to 15 percent during the afternoon with poor overnight recoveries.
The weather service advises people to follow fire restrictions and avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting or campfires. Check weather.gov/reno for updates and livingwithfire.info for preparedness tips.
