94 percent of submitted comments to board oppose naming Dayton road Pres. Trump Way
Lyon County made national headlines earlier this month after County Commissioner Ken Gray proposed a street name change from Old Dayton Valley Road to “Pres. Trump Way,” in what some believe was a violation of open meeting laws.
Due to the possible violation, the commissioners will vote on the agenda item once again Thursday at their upcoming meeting.
Within the agenda packet, public comment that was mailed to commissioners was included; within the 37-page attachment, only 2 responders were in favor of the proposed name change, while 30 were against.
Many of those against the change stated they were Trump supports but did not want to see the street name changed at all and, if it did need to be changed, would much rather have it be named after a Nevadan.
Others stated they were against the idea due to the financial burden that would fall on the schools and the senior center.
Resident Steve Ayer stated, “The idea is completely insane. Who’s gonna cover the cost to make this silly change? The local taxpayers, me! I supported Trump and I think this is the most ridiculous idea ever. Do you really want to piss off all of the people that didn’t vote for him? Stop the nonsense. There is a reason Lyon County is broke. County officials are wasting their time on silliness and not investing time into bringing commercial and industrial (industries) into the County. Stop wasting our time and tax dollars! Thank you!”
Resident Tami Dufresne stated, “I am so disappointed and disgusted. With all the issues facing Dayton and Lyon County right now, THIS is an issue that requires our Commissioners’ time? I do not think so. Has any analysis been completed regarding the time and expense involved in renaming the road? A new sign, address changes for all the businesses on that road, etc. Who will be taking the time to make the necessary changes and who will be paying for that? If renaming is approved (despite the many objections of Dayton residents), why would it be named after a divisive president facing criminal charges? Why wouldn’t we honor a historical figure who was instrumental to the development of our community?”
Resident Jackson Fitzimmons stated, “I support the proposed name change of Old Dayton Valley Road to ‘President Trump Way.’ I think it’s a brilliant symbolic gesture. Democrat politicians do it all the time there is no reason you can’t do it too.”
Many residents also noted their concerns over the cost of frequent repairs due to vandalism or theft.
One resident asked whether or not they would also be renaming a road “President Obama Way” to be fair.
