Carson City area weather: Thunderstorms possible Thursday, NWS issues Fire Watch
The seasonably hot weather continues this week with a weather pattern change that may bring thunderstorms to the Carson City region, and along with that, the danger of lightning strikes, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Fire Weather Watch.
Storms will start fairly dry, with new fire starts from lightning possible, NWS forecasters say. These storms will become wetter as the week goes on with an increased flash flood risk from heavy rain possible by the end of the week into the weekend, especially over burn scars and steep terrain.
The Fire Weather Watch is in effect from Thursday afternoon through Thursday night. If the storms materialize the weather service advises a strong outflow of winds 40 to 50 mph for the western Nevada Sierra front, which includes Carson City.
The thunderstorms are expected to move into the area on Thursday. The north edge of the thunderstorm activity will have limited rainfall with lightning caused fires probable.
Lightning can create new fire starts and may combine with strong outflow winds to cause a fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
The threat of thunderstorms will persist Friday through Sunday, according to the weather service.
The weather service advises people to avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions. Check weather.gov/reno for
updates and livingwithfire.info for preparedness tips.
As far as the heat, temperatures in the Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas will remain in the mid 90s through Sunday.
