Team of scuba divers begin underwater cleanup efforts at Donner Lake
Colin West, executive director of Clean Up the Lake, a non-profit organization, along with three other scuba divers will be braving the cold water of Donner Lake in Truckee, Calif. for two weeks in an effort to fight trash pollution that began July 6.
In a test dive 2 days prior to the Fourth of July, the team pulled out 263 pounds in a matter of hours.
In April 2020, Clean Up the Lake made the difficult decision to postpone their main event, the 72-mile scuba clean-up of Lake Tahoe, until Summer 2021, but are excited to still be able to do an event that aligns with their mission of fighting back against trash pollution.
“Although this a smaller endeavor than the 72 mile scuba clean-up of Lake Tahoe, this clean-up is a way do something positive for environment and great practice for our larger event next summer.” said Colin West, founder and executive director of Clean Up the Lake. “Plus, this effot comes with an added bonus of following the holiday rush of people who have left trash behind.”
West understands that more needs to be done to prevent further plastic from getting back into lakes. He is currently working with microplastic research teams from UC Davis and Desert Research Institute to better understand the issue at hand so in the long run his organization can do more than pick up the trash but address the plastic issue at its root.
As a non-profit organization, Clean Up the Lake depends on donations to continue fighting the good fight, Clean Up The Lake has an Adopt a Mile program where donors can sponsor one mile of the lake to be cleaned by the divers next summer.
