Sierra Nevada University officially becomes University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe following merger
On Friday, July 1, Lake Tahoe’s Sierra Nevada University was acquired by the University of Nevada, Reno.
As of July, the Incline Village college, previously Sierra Nevada College, which first opened its doors in the fall of 1969 with 23 students, will go forward as the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe.
The merger began in June 2021 when Sierra Nevada University’s Board of Trustees approached Nevada about a possible transfer of assets and operations.
“This year-long transition has been one of our University’s most complex and game-changing accomplishments, and we will continue to work with regulators in the coming months to provide final documentation of this transaction,” said University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval. “I wish to thank the individuals on both campuses who worked so well together during the past year, and for the work that you will continue to do to integrate our families together in the coming years.”
The merger is ongoing, as both institutions work to migrate digital and physical assets into the Nevada system. The libraries have been working diligently to capture several websites relating to Sierra Nevada University, including athletic programs, Masters of Fine Arts Programs, campus news, and more.
A transition team was created from a partnership between Sue Johnson, Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration at Sierra Nevada University, and Jill Heaton, Executive Vice President and Provost for SNU as well as a longtime faculty member at Nevada.
This fall, the campus will welcome in the first classes of the newly minted UNR-Tahoe at the Incline Village campus.
