Thunderstorms developing Thursday near Reno, may spill over to Carson City and Tahoe
The National Weather Service in Reno issued a special weather statement Thursday afternoon regarding thunderstorms it was tracking on Doppler radar.
At 2:50 p.m., radar showed thunderstorms near northwest Reno and Cold Springs Valley, or 12 miles east of Chilcoot. These storms were nearly stationary. Forecasters advise that the main storm may continue to develop through the afternoon and early evening, moving into western Nevada areas including Carson City, Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe.
Heavy rainfall is occurring with the storm that forecasters are tracking northwest of Reno. The weather service advises to expect ponding of water on roadways. In areas of steep terrain, minor rock slides are possible. Drivers should slow down and turn on their headlights if encountering heavy rains.
The weather service says locations that could be impacted by the storms include Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley, Gardnerville Ranchos, Johnson Lane, Dayton, Virginia City, Stampede Reservoir, Incline Village, Kings Beach, Spooner Summit, Wingfield Springs, Northwest Reno, Spanish Springs and Glenshire-Devonshire.
Frequent lightning, localized heavy rainfall, winds in excess of 40 mph, and blowing dust will be possible with storms that form Thursday. The weather service advises that the storms may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.
