Nevada’s ‘Tier 2’ net excess energy credit reaches full subscription of 80 megawatts of rooftop solar generation
CARSON CITY — The applied-for and installed capacity for the rooftop solar net energy metering (“NEM”) program in Nevada has reached a combined 80 megawatts under the Tier 2 net excess energy credit rate structure established by Assembly Bill (“AB”) 405.
Tier 2 was opened in August 2018 when the applied-for and installed capacity for the NEM program exceeded a combined 80 megawatts in Tier 1. Tier 3 is now open for new applications.
The NEM rate structure outlined in AB 405 includes four tiers and is set to decrease over time – NEM customers in the Tier 1 category receive a credit of 95 percent of the retail rate for the net excess electricity sent back to the grid and beyond what was delivered to them by NV Energy over the monthly billing period.
Tier 2 customers will receive a net-excess energy credit of 88% of the retail rate. Similar to Tiers 1 and 2, the newly-opened Tier 3 is available to 80 megawatts of rooftop solar capacity. Tier 3 customers will receive 81% of the retail rate for net excess generation.
Tier 4 customers will receive 75% of the retail rate for net excess generation. There is no capacity limit for Tier 4. All NEM customers, regardless of Tier, will continue to receive credit at 100% of the retail rate for all generation up to the amount of electricity that they consume from NV Energy during a monthly billing period.
Updated applied-for and installed NEM rooftop solar capacity totals for Tiers 1-3 are posted on the PUCN’s website each business day at www.puc.nv.gov.
