State Historic Preservation keeps Nevada's diverse cultural treasures thriving year after year
CARSON CITY — Nevada is a historic and cultural wonder, abounding with stories, traditions, archaeology, cultural resources, and buildings that contribute to Nevada’s unique sense of place.
Together, these revered treasures help bring Nevada’s multilayered heritage to life. Preserving, enhancing, and restoring the Silver State’s bountiful historic and cultural resources is at the heart of the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office’s everyday mission.
“At its core, historic preservation is about people coming together to preserve shared history and traditions as represented in the places we value,” said Rebecca Palmer, Administrator of the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office. “We strive to nurture the historic character of Nevada’s past, as the State continues to evolve and change with the times. We want our children to know Nevada’s historic places, to tell Nevada’s stories, and to celebrate Nevada’s heritage.”
In Nevada, there are more than 110,000 historic, cultural and archaeological resources statewide. The Nevada State Historic Preservation Office emphasizes that preservation practices, both large and small, support numerous economic, social, and environmental benefits, such as local job growth, small business development, sustainable community development & revitalization, and heritage tourism.
Additionally, the Historic Preservation Tax Incentive program, coordinated through the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office, supports local businesses by providing federal tax credits to complete preservation projects that reuse important historic places and make them relevant for a new generation.
Some recent examples of Historic Preservation Tax Incentive projects achieved through the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office include the following:
· Genoa Pink House (Genoa, NV) – Tax credits used to rehabilitate the former Reese-Johnson-Virgin House.
· Las Vegas Museum, Las Vegas Post Office and Courthouse (Las Vegas, NV) – Tax Credits used to rehabilitate a significant historic federal building into the iconic Mob Museum.
· B Street House Bed and Breakfast (Virginia City, NV) – Tax credits used to rehabilitate the former Henry Piper House.
· L’ essence Day Spa & Salon (Reno, NV) – Tax Credits used to rehabilitate the former Tyson House.
· Riverside Artist Lofts (Reno, NV) – Tax Credits used to rehabilitate the Riverside Hotel.
Additionally, as part of a national movement to preserve America’s past, each year the National Park Service awards federal grant funding to historic preservation offices, including the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office, to aid in State and local historic conservation efforts. This year, the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office was awarded $775,000, supporting essential expertise, resources, and preservation functions statewide.
