Carson City area weather: Gusty winds, low humidity prompt Red Flag fire weather warning
Gusty winds and low humidity expected Monday has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning for Carson City and much of western Nevada and the Northern Sierra Front.
The Red Flag Warning area includes Douglas, Storey, Southern Washoe and Western Lyon counties, southern West Humboldt Basin in Pershing County, the Lahontan Basin including Churchill and Eastern Mineral counties and Lassen County in California.
The Red Flag Warning is in effect from 2 p.m. Monday afternoon to 11 p.m. Monday evening. Winds will be from the southwest to west 20 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph locally higher in wind prone locations, and humidity 7 to 14 percent
The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
The weather service advises people to avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dryvegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions. Check weather.gov/reno for updates and livingwithfire.info for preparedness tips.
