Gov. Sisolak makes appearance at Black Lives Matter Protest in Carson City
Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak made an appearance at the Carson City Black Lives Matter protest on Friday afternoon to speak with protesters and show his support for the cause.
Protesters gathered in front of the Carson City Nugget at 3:30 p.m. before marching to the Nevada State Legislature, where they flanked each side of Carson Street with signs that read things such as “Black Lives Matter” “End Police Brutality” and “Racists are Stinky.”
Governor Sisolak made a brief appearance on Carson Street during the protest, and even held a “Black Lives Matter” sign given to him by a protester, before “elbow bumping” Carson City sheriff’s deputies who were on scene, and posing for a photo with them.
“I think these are peaceful folks who are just speaking their mind,” said Governor Sisolak. “This is important to them. It’s encouraging to see the young generation participating so I’m thrilled to come and say hi to them.”
Carson City Sheriff’s Office deputies as well as Sheriff Ken Furlong escorted protesters as they made their way first to the Legislator and then later to the Governor’s Mansion.
When asked if the Sheriff’s Office was anticipating any unrest during the protest, he said that they are prepared for anything.
“I anticipate the worst with everything,” said Furlong. “We have to. Nothing occurred today that was not anticipated.”
Sheriff Furlong said that deputies escorted the protesters down Carson Street due to the high number of children in the protest.
“We’re looking out for children’s welfare,” said Furlong. “We expected a number of children so we made sure to take care of them.”
After some protesters entered Carson Street with signs, deputies discussed shutting down the street to ensure the safety of both protesters and motorists, but soon after the protesters marched to the Governor's Mansion.
Some counter protesters arrived at the governor’s mansion and there were verbal altercations between them and protestors, but the protest ended shortly after the march to the Governor’s Mansion and most protesters dispersed.
