Historic Pony Express re-ride on the move with stops today in Lyon County, Carson City, Genoa and Stateline

More than 750 horseback riders are crossing the United States from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, Calif., as part of the annual Pony Express Re-Ride. Riders will be coming today, Wednesday, through Lyon County and Fort Churchill into Carson City, with the ride continuing to Genoa and onward to Stateline at Lake Tahoe.

The 1,966 mile, eight state event is conducted 24 hours a day until the mail is delivered to its destination. The Pony Express has fascinated Americans since its first riders hit the leather in April 1860. It traveled 1,966 miles between Missouri and California in 10 days or less. This innovative mail service lasted only 19 months, but won a permanent place in the history of the American West.

The riders are carrying mail in their mochilla, a leather carrier used to hold the mail used during 18 months of the Pony Express. About 1,000 letters are transported annually during the historic re-rides.

The re-ride stays close to the original trail and as close to 10 days as possible.

Go here to get up-to-the-minute reports from the trail. GPS is being used to track the horse and rider as the times listed above are estimated.

People can catch a glimpse of the ride as they make their way through Western Nevada, Lake Tahoe and El Dorado county on Wednesday and early Thursday. The end of the ride is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Sacramento.
