Carson City shuts down John Street apartment complex, copper piping discovered stolen
Residents at an East John Street apartment complex in Carson City were ordered to leave Friday afternoon due to health concerns after the Carson City Health Department discovered that the copper water and sewer piping underneath the complex had been stolen.
The discovery came after health officials were alerted by maintenance and tenants of a strong odor of sewage coming from a number of units in the 22-unit complex.
At least 50 people were ordered to vacate the premise immediately due to the apartment complex being deemed a health hazard by Carson City health officials.
"The apartment complex is currently uninhabitable because of this crime," said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. "The health department is assisting residents in finding places for them to stay."
Apartment management says its tenants were given $100 a night per-diem so they could find places to stay. Management and the health department said tenants could be without a place to stay for two weeks as contractors will be installing water and sewer piping.
Damages from the theft has amounted to more than $50,000 said Furlong.
