Carson City's MAC reopens, Pool and Community Center scheduled to reopen June 8
Recreational facilities and services in Carson City are beginning to reopen under new provisions by Governor Sisolak’s Phase 2 directives.
The Multipurpose Athletic Center has reopened and the Carson City Aquatic Facility and Carson City Community Center are gearing towards reopening on Monday, June 8.
New safety measures including reduced gatherings and reservations will be put in place to keep participants safe during these times.
“I’m just happy we’re able to provide our services back to the community,” Carson City Parks and Recreation Superintendent Dan Earp said. “I know that people have been anxious to have places to go and be active and healthy, and it feels like it’s safe enough for us to provide for our community once again.”
Below is a list of reopening dates and provisions set in place for the Multipurpose Athletic Center, Carson City Aquatic Facility and Carson City Community Center.
Multipurpose Athletic Center
The MAC, located on 1860 Russell Way, reopened Friday with their daily hours from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
To follow state guidelines for reduced gatherings, three people are allowed on each half court basketball court. Four people are allowed on a pickleball court, and no more than 10 people are allowed on the walking track at one time.
“We’re taking a phased approach right now. Things are going to open back up slowly,” Earp said. “We should be able to accommodate the majority of people who want to use our facilities. It just has to be done in a more structured manner.”
In order to save a spot on the court, reservations are required and can be made through online at www.carson.org/ccpr, by phone at (775)-887-2339 or in-person during business hours.
Earp said that there were approximately four reservations for the MAC’s reopening.
“It’s going to take a little bit of time for people to start coming in,” he said. “Some people may not be aware that we’re open right now, but we will work with the reservation process.”
Basketball games or pickleball rotations will not be permitted. Participants are also required to bring their own equipment including basketballs, pickleballs and paddles. They will not be loaned out by the MAC at this time.
The cost for a basketball court rental is $9 and a pickleball court rental is $12. Restrooms will be available for participants, but changing areas will be closed. Additional social distancing measures are expected to be put in place.
Participants are encouraged, but not required, to wear a mask when they step foot on the courts.
Carson City Aquatic Facility
The Carson City Aquatic Facility, located on 841 N. Roop St. adjacent to Mills Park, opens June 8 with its Monday through Friday hours from 5:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
On Saturdays, the facility is open from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.
It is closed on Sundays.
Reservations are required and can be made online at www.carson.org/ccpr, by phone at (775)-887-2242 or in-person during business hours. Lanes can be reserved for lap swimming.
Earp is expecting a busy reopening day at the facility.
“We’ve probably had about 30 or so reservations for Monday, if not more,” he said. “It’s been about 4 or 5 reservations every hour for the lanes that are open. There is still plenty of space, but planning needs to be done.”
The 50-meter pool and Therapy Pool will be open and available to the public. A maximum of eight people are allowed in the Therapy Pool at one time. One person is held per swimming lane and increases to three people per lane if they come from the same household.
Restrooms and showers will be available for participants, but access to locker rooms and changing areas is closed. Swimmers are encouraged to leave the facility in their swim attire in order to reduce the number of people gathering and changing at the facility.
Participants are required to bring their own equipment such as fins, kick-boards and other aqua equipment. They will not be loaned out by the facility.
Earp said water exercise classes and team activities can be offered in a later phase, but there is no official timetable for when they return. Additional social distancing measures are expected to be put in place.
Carson City Community Center
The Carson City Community Center, located on 851 E. William St., reopens June 8 from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Instructor led classes can resume as soon as individual instructors are prepared and have the required social distancing measures established.
The Camp Carson Summer Youth Program is expected to begin June 29. Recreation staff will contact those who signed up on the waiting list, based on order of sign up, to register for camp beginning next week.
Outdoor recreational facilities including neighborhood parks, trails, outdoor sports courts, archery range, golf course and disc golf are all open with social distancing restrictions. Picnics and park gatherings with groups of less than 50 people are allowed. Playgrounds and sports fields will remain closed.
Earp said that recreation classes including fitness classes and drivers education courses can start as early as next Monday if the plan is approved. More courses and classes can start back up in the near future.
“Those meeting spaces are available for use if they follow the social distancing guidelines,” Earp said.
