Carson City deputies make arrests for attempted robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and DUI

A 42-year-old man was arrested Friday for suspicion of attempted robbery and attempted grand larceny, a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report states.

Jonathan Marshal Duvall was taken into custody in the area of Park and Carson streets. According to the booking report, the suspect approached a couple who had rode their bikes to a mechanic so they could pick up their vehicle. They were approached by the suspect as they were loading their bikes on the vehicle.

The couple said they believed the man was armed with a knife or a weapon, and said the man told them he wanted to take the vehicle and what was inside. The male victim told the suspect to leave several times, in which he eventually did. The female victim called 911 to report what happened after the man fled.

The couple were not assault but the intent was there, according to the booking report. They were also unsure if the man had a knife or another kind of weapon in his hands as they were being threatened.

The couple gave a description. A deputy advised she located the suspect at East Park and Carson streets. The suspect told deputies that he was guilty of telling the couple to give him their vehicle and belongings, according to the report. Bail: $40,000.

In other arrests:
— A 44-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor domestic battery.

Victor Hugo Salas was taken into custody at 2:21 p.m. According to the booking report, deputies responded to the 400 block of Hot Springs Road for a domestic battery.

Deputies arrived and began their investigation, learning the intoxicated suspect allegedly grabbed the victim by the hair, pulled her to the ground, grabbed a ceramic bowl and acted like he was going to strike the victim in the head with it.

Deputies learned the victim was able to use a key chain with OC spray and sprayed the man in the face. The man then started to destroy the interior of the residence. He was located on the side-yard of the property and taken into custody. Bail: $23,137.

— A 40-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday, 8:12 p.m. for suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, intimidating a police officer, and resisting among other alleged offenses. Jeffrey Cotton Edwards was taken into custody in the 4600 block of South Carson Street. He was also booked for suspicion of operating an off-road vehicle on the highway and failure to yield.

According to the booking report, a CCSO deputy observed a man riding a quad west on Clearview Drive on pavement at approximately 35 mph. The deputy observed the man drive through the intersection and continue west on Clearview to Cochise Street. The officer activated his lights and siren and caught up with the quad, observing it didn't have a license plate or identifying features to show it was registered and allowed to be on the roadway.

The deputy observed the driver look back at him and continued driving west on the pavement, turning into a gas station and coming to a complete stop.

The man got off the quad and turned toward the officer. The deputy instructed the man to get back on the quad. The man asked what he did wrong. The officer again instructed him to get back on the quad. The man refused. The officer continued to give verbal commands and pulled his duty handgun out of its holder and held it at a low ready.

The officer ordered the man to get on the ground. The man said no, placing his right hand near his waist line. The officer instructed the man to point his hands out. The man complied but continued to refuse to get on the ground, then repeatedly placed his left and right hands near his waist and told the officer no several times when the officer demanded for him to get on the ground, the report states.

Other officers arrived at the scene to assist, where the man again was instructed to get on the ground. The man refused and was forced to the ground and handcuffed.

A deputy conducted a search incident for safety and security and located a 44 magnum revolver in a hydration pack the man had on his back, as well as a small glass marijuana pipe in his pocket. Dispatch advised the man did not have a carry conceal permit, according to the report.

The suspect continued to be uncooperative, yelling and pulling away, while an officer attempted to take him to a patrol vehicle, the report states.

The suspect asked what was going to happen to his quad. The officer told him it would be towed. The man began screaming, saying the deputy was going to die and that he and his friends would find him, the arrest report states.

He was taken to Carson City Jail where he was booked for suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm without a license, a felony, gross misdemeanor suspicion of intimidating a peace officer (for allegedly saying the deputy was going to die and saying he and his friends would find him) misdemeanor eluding, suspicion of operating an off-road vehicle on a roadway (for driving his unregistered quad on the paved portion of the roadway) and resisting arrest. Total bail amount listed for the alleged offenses: $14,966.

— A 35-year-old man was arrested Saturday for two violation of bail condition warrants issued May 10, 2021 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $6,000 cash.

— A 52-year-old Reno woman was arrested Saturday for suspicion of a second DUI and disobedience of a traffic control device. According to the booking report, a deputy made a traffic stop after observing the driver running a red light at the intersection of North Carson and William Street.

The officer could smell an odor of alcohol on the woman's breath, and noticed her eyes were red and watery, and her speech slightly slurred. The woman admitted to consuming two beers and a glass of wine earlier.

She was asked if she would participate in standardized field sobriety tests. The woman agreed and showed signs of impairment on the tests. She provided a preliminary breath test of .182 and was arrested for suspicion of DUI second and for running the red light. Bail: $2,587.

— A 59-year-old Henderson man was arrested early Tuesday for suspicion of DUI and a speeding offense.
According to the arrest report, a deputy observed the driver going approximately 40 mph in a posted 25 mph zone on South Carson Street.

The deputy made a traffic stop and could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The officer asked the man if he had anything to drink. The man said he had not.

A deputy informed the man that he could not only smell alcohol from the vehicle but also coming from his person. The deputy asked the man if he would submit to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. The man showed signs of impairment on the tests, according to the report. He provided a preliminary breath test of .111 and was arrested for suspicion of DUI. At jail he provided evidentiary breath samples of .105 and .099. Bail: $1,229.

— A 51-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Tuesday in the area of South Carson and East 8th Street for misdemeanor suspicion of being an ex-felon failing to change address. Bail: $242.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

In collaboration with Chartwells, the Carson City School District foodservice partner, Culinary Arts students from Ms. Tammy Borreman’s class at Carson Middle School competed in a “Discovery Kitchen Cook Off.” Similar to a mini version of the Food Network’s Iron Chef, the timed cooking competition featured teams of three students who prepared succulent dishes for a judging panel.

Shoe Tree Brewing, with locations in Carson City and Minden, was recently awarded a Silver Award in the 2024 World Beer Cup, the most prestigious beer competition in the world.
