Lyon County to ask Gov. Sisolak for Highway 50 safety changes to reduce traffic crashes
The Lyon County Board of Commissioners will be petitioning for safety equipment and processes on Highway 50 from Gov. Steve Sisolak.
In a resolution to be discussed and possible approved on Thursday, June 2, Commissioners will request Gov. Sisolak direct the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to implement safety equipment and processes on Highway 50 from the Carson City line to Ten Mile Hill.
Commissioners state that they recognize the increased volume of traffic within this section along Highway 50, and have received numerous citizen complaints concerning traffic accidents that result in serious injury and death.
The resolution states there are a number of intersections that are unsafe for left hand turns, and others that do not have acceleration lanes to safely enter Highway 50.
The commissioners state they do not have the authority or jurisdiction for the construction, maintenance, design or installation of safety equipment on this section of Highway 50, which is why they are petitioning the governor to direct NDOT to implement these changes.
They are asking for traffic signals to be installed to enhance intersections safety for left hand turns and to reduce speed; acceleration lanes to be installed; and for appropriate equipment to be installed that would reduce collisions caused by crossing over into oncoming traffic.
Throughout the state, there has been a massive increase in road fatalities in the last few months, which Nevada State Police called “shocking and uncharacteristic.”
