William Gage Furlong was taken into custody after he allegedly attempted to steal $594 in merchandise from Walmart, according to the booking report. Among the items he attempted to steal were knee, back and elbow braces, a sports watch, pocket knives, bracelets and Pokeman cards. He was in the store for nearly two hours in his attempt to steal items, with loss prevention calling sheriff’s dispatch at 9:19 a.m. and him being detained at around 11:20 a.m.
During the arrest, the homeless suspect was uncooperative, combative and demanded he wanted to speak his attorney, whom he said was an uncle. It was clear through surveillance video that the suspect did not intend to pay for the items he had taken out of the packages, as he could be seen concealing the empty packages on shelves and items on his person, in his pockets and in his backpack.
Later he told deputies that he “just wanted to get some stuff” and that “you don’t understand what its like to not have money or food,” the arrest report states.
Deputies searched the belongings and backpack and located several lock picks and WD40. Along with several long metal items used to open car doors, and a blue plastic handle pick, he also faces charges of possession of burglary tools, a gross misdemeanor. Bail: $22,912.
