Carson City area weather: Warm up ahead this week and likely into Memorial holiday
After a weekend that brought bouts of Sierra snow and valley rain showers, Carson City, western Nevada and the Lake Tahoe area will experience sunny skies and a warm up for the week ahead, according to the National Weather Service.
With a potential for some fog developing overnight into early Monday morning, the region will transition into clearing skies and season temperatures, according to NWS forecasters.
Wednesday through Friday look to be a bit warmer with temperatures about 5 degrees above normal and typical afternoon winds likely. Highs will likely be in the 80s for the lower valleys and 70s for the mountain valleys, according to the weather service.
The preliminary outlook for the Memorial Day weekend shows near seasonable temperatures with a chance of an upper low moving through the region. While it doesn't look to be a cold one, it could bring a few afternoon thunderstorms each day. If you have plans next weekend, especially outdoors, it would be a good idea to check the forecast for those days.
Here is the latest weather discussion issued Sunday afternoon from the National Weather Service.
The theme this week will be warming temperatures through Thursday, although a progressive wave moving by to the north will briefly stall or even reverse warming on Tuesday before it resumes on Wednesday.
Westerly breezes will kick up with gusts to 25-35 mph Monday afternoon as a front works into far northern California and increases thermal gradients; nothing too worrisome but breezes will bring increased lake chop. Tuesday is expected to remain breezy with afternoon gusts, 20 to 30 mph.
Precipitation-wise, there is a lower end chance for afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms across far northeast California and northwest Nevada on Monday as warming temperatures and increasingly convergent westerly flow north and east of Susanville — locally dubbed "Lassen-northern Washoe convergence zone" —combine to encourage convection development.
Then, Monday night and Tuesday, low pressure moving into the Pacific Northwest will push a cool front into far northern portions of CA and NV for a continued threat for showers there; however, thunderstorm chances diminish as post-frontal airmass cooling and less convergent flow serve to discourage deep convection.
Wednesday will feature less wind as weak high pressure settles into northern Nevada. Then, Thursday and Friday will bring a return to breezes as another wave moves into the Pacific Northwest. Temperatures do not look to change too much late week (highs near or slightly above average) as the upper low looks to be farther north than Tuesday with little or no cooling working into the region.
Weekend, temperatures remain in check as broad, weak troughing (good support from ensemble clusters) hangs around the West. The troughing will also set the stage for afternoon buildups and a chance for showers and thunderstorms each day, especially near the Sierra.
Meanwhile, closer to home, the forecast for this week calls for sunny skies and warming temperatures through the work week. While some NWS forecasters say lower valleys can expect temperatures in the low 80s by the end of the week, other forecasters, for now at least, say temperatures may be in the upper 70s.
The local forecast, as of Sunday afternoon, says Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas daytime highs will be near 70 on Monday, mid-60s Tuesday, low 70s Wednesday and mid 70s Thursday. Overnight lows will be in the mid to upper 40s. The extended forecast calls for highs Friday in the upper 70s, and middle 70s on Saturday.
Again, these temperature forecasts are subject to change.
For the Lake Tahoe Basin, including Stateline, Zephyr Cove, Incline Village and South Lake Tahoe, highs Monday and Tuesday will be around 60, Wednesday the middle 60s and Thursday, the upper 60s. The extended forecast calls for sunny skies Friday with highs in the upper 60s, and a slight chance for thunderstorms on Saturday with highs in the mid-60s.
