National Foster Care Month shines spotlight of gratitude on CASA of Carson City volunteers
CARSON CITY — To bring awareness to National Foster Care Month in May, In Plain Sight Marketing as part of its 2021 Not So Random Acts of Kindness Campaign shines its spotlight on CASA of Carson City.
Executive director of CASA of Carson City, Melanie “Emmy” McCormick, said she happily took this opportunity to show gratitude for all the volunteers and supporters who help enrich foster children’s lives.
“Volunteers are what make up our organization,” she said. “They are pivotal in knowing what these children need. CASA has been blessed with support from our community. It takes a community to really support the needs of our children, and we are so grateful for all of them, from the quilt makers who supply warm legacy-style gifts to children in our care to the agencies who guide the kids through the child welfare system.”
CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, provides quality court-appointed advocacy for abused and neglected children in child welfare cases, through a network of community volunteers who work with children to ensure their voices are heard during court proceedings.
“CASA not only benefits children but their parents too,” Cindy Mitz, CASA of Carson City advocate, said. “You get to know the whole family and it has been rewarding to see all the progress that has been made. Being there for the boys I advocate for and letting them know there is somebody looking out for them has made a huge difference in their lives. For my boys, I started them in a program with Horses and Humans and loved it. Taking them to the horse was the therapy they needed.”
McCormick said they are currently in desperate need of volunteers for the child welfare cases in Carson City.
“These advocates make a child feel supported, secure and strong,” McCormick said. Our children need protection. That child you will advocate for needs you more than anything.”
