Valley side of Kingsbury Grade to close Wednesday morning as part of shooting investigation
State Route 207, also known as Kingsbury Grade, will be closed Wednesday morning from Foothill Road on the valley side to Tramway Drive, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
The closure is from 9 a.m. to noon and is part of a continuing investigation of the officer involved shooting that happened on Friday, April 26. Investigators are conducting a scene re-creation and walk through with all officers involved.
The temporary closure, although a minor inconvenience to the public, is an essential part of the investigation and successful prosecution of the suspect in this case, said DCSO Sgt. Jeff Schemenauer.
The pursuit was initiated by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at approximately 9:45 p.m. when they located the suspect vehicle driving through their jurisdiction. The suspect, Stefon Demar Jefferson, was wanted for murder in the Bay Area. The suspect's vehicle continued without regard for public safety at dangerous speeds over State Route 207 (Kingsbury Grade) into the Carson Valley.
During the pursuit, a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office sergeant was subsequently shot, sustaining a non-life threatening injury. The vehicle driven by the suspect crashed approximately one quarter mile West of Foothill Road, on State Route 207.
Jefferson surrendered to authorities without incident and was taken into custody. He has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer in addition to numerous additional felonies related to this investigation.
